Eat: Cold November days and good food

I love my new cook book by Sophie Dahl. Simple, delicious recipes for every season.

One of my favourite recipes from the winter lunch chapter.

I've had this book for years and love it. Nigel Slater has the best recipe for vegetarian gravy. Add it to Cauldron Lincolnshire vegetarian sausages, potato and swede mash, and green veg - delicious! Start the gravy first then you will have a meal in half an hour. Great for a quick supper after work and if its been a long day perfect comfort food.

Vegetables in season this month - November

artichoke - beetroot - squashes - celeriac - celery - chicory - chillies - jerusalem artichoke - kale -kohlrabi - leeks - parsnips - potatoes - pumpkin - shallots - swede - turnips - watercress - broccoli - brussels sprouts - carrots - garlic - onions - radishes - rocket - runner beans - salsify - spinach -spring onions - fennel - lettuce - marrow - sorrel - sweetcorn - tomatoes

And fruit

apples - cranberries - elderberries - pears - quince - blackberries - damsons - plums - quince - sloes

Gravy is good with super duper organic meaty sausages, preferably toad in the hole
